Awkward. is an American teen comedy series created for MTV by Lauren Iungerich.
Jenna Hamilton is a social outcast stuck in a secret relationship with the popular Matty McKibbin. When she receives a “care-frontation” letter accusing her of being a loser, her attempt to get rid of the letter result in an accident that looks suspiciously like a suicide attempt. Now she’s got more attention than she ever wanted at school at home, especially with a nosy guidance counselor and a mean girl.
Taking the advice in the “care-frontation” letter to heart, Jenna tries to become more outgoing and her popularity skyrockets as a result. She discovers that her secret boyfriend, a relationship Jenna is beginning to resent, has a best friend who is into her. He breaks up with his girlfriend to date Jenna, causing even more complicated drama to enter her life.
Awkward has received mainly positive reviews. It has been praised for being a show about a teen girl that is “neither maudlin nor alarming nor conceived with the intent to preach or shock.” It has been lauded for missing so many of the tropes of the typical teen series.
If you enjoy teen movies and television but are looking for something actually funny and more down to earth, then Awkward. is the series for you.
