Television’s most notorious Iranians have returned with a new fifth season of Shahs of Sunset!
#ShahsSunset is an American reality television series broadcast by the Bravo network. Being the second series in television history to focus on Iranians (after E!’s 2004 series Love Is in the Heir), #SS is executively produced by American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest, alongside Eric Gardner and Omid Kahangi.
Originally premiering on March 11th of 2012, SS is centered on a group of rich Iranian friends living in Beverly Hills (Tehrangeles, specifically) and attempting to balance their modernized personal lives and careers with the traditional culture and values of their families.
Raza Farahan is an openly gay Los Angeles real estate agent, recently married, and often found struggling with rumors and misconceptions regarding his sexuality.
Golnesa Gharachedaghi is a budding entrepreneur who recently gained independence from her wealthy Muslim family by opening a hair extension boutique called “GG’s Extensions”.
Asa Soltan Rahmati, from Venice, is a highly successful artist with works published by the International Museum of Women; her most recent endeavor is Diamond Water, described as “alkaline water put in contact with diamonds before being bottled”.
Mike Shouhed is a Persian Jew, recently returning from Las Vegas following failed real estate ventures and hoping for future successes.
Mercedes “MJ” Javid, known for her curvy figure, is a Hollywood Hills real estate agent with an extremely tense relationship with her mother.
Lastly, season five’s newest addition is Shervin Roohparvar, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur (with past successes in tech, nightlight and retail industries), who finally decides that now may be the time to settle down with someone special. Although Shervin has previously made appearances on the series, this season will mark his official premiere as a main cast member.
Despite the series’ intended focus on Iranian traditions, it must be said that if you close your eyes while watching the show, the cast seems “indistinguishable from any other reality show about any six young Americans who have an above-average amount of money and a fondness for themselves”.
The fifth season of #SS will reportedly be centered on relationships and will feature the core group of friends being shaken by “rumors of infidelity and irresponsible lifestyles”. While it won’t all be negative, it’s fair to say that the group will be experiencing both extreme highs and devastating lows.
SS fifth season premiered via the Bravo channel on April 10th, 2016, at 9 PM. Entitled “Persian of the Pacific” and garnering an audience of approximately 1.6 million, the episode got fans up-to-date with everything that has been going with the cast since the fourth season finale.
Despite being stood up at the altar in Thailand, Reza shocks everyone by staying with Adam and making their relationship work. Meanwhile, viewers soon learn that MJ has a new boyfriend who she met online. A reviewer sarcastically explains, “Never one to disappoint, MJ tells this romantic fairy tale of how they met online, then he went to their first date in basketball shorts and greeted her with an erection. Charming.” Asa, seemingly always on the lookout for creative pursuits, is now focusing her endeavors on colorful caftans, even hiring an assistant to
Shervin is the key to the premiere’s plot, throwing a thirty-fifth white party birthday party, which he describes as “St. Tropez but in San Diego”. Acting as the melting pot for the cast to reconvene, things get a little haywire at the party and GG ultimately gets drunk and tries to attack Asifa.
Stay tuned for the next episode of #ShahsSunset, entitled “C’est la Vida” and scheduled to air on April 17th, 2016.
