Home Fires is from creator Simon Block with production from ITV Studios and is a drama TV series set during the war in England, with the series airing in 2015.

What’s It All About?

#HomeFires follows the lives of inspirational women living in a rural community out in Cheshire. Their lives and those around them are shadowed by World War II. When the war starts the women find themselves separated from the ones they love, including brothers, sons, fathers and husbands. They find themselves having to get together and comfort each other as the pressures of war increase.

What’s Been Happening?

Season 1 episode 1 of HF aired on May 3 2015 and introduced viewers to the lives of the residents in Great Paxford village in Cheshire during 1939. The war is looming over the village and residents and the local women fear for their husbands, fathers and sons as the war draws closer. Throughout season 1 the Women’s Institute is set up and the season ended with there being fears of an invasion following an evacuation of Dunkirk and the Institute raising money to purchase an ambulance. The season ended with episode 6 which aired on June 14 2015.
But are we going to see a season 2 and when?

What’s In Store?

If you followed the lives of the women and their families in #HomeFires you will be pleased to hear that season 2 is coming our way. The drama TV series attracted on average 6.2 million viewers which means that there will at least be one more season if not more to come.
At the moment there isn’t any news about the casting for season 2, however the executive producer said that it was thrilling that the ensemble cast would be returning to make another season, so it is fair to say that the whole cast may be in the new season. The 2nd season is already being filmed in Cheshire in England.
There isn’t a date for the airing of season 2 of #HF but as season 1 aired in May it is thought that it could be around May 2016 when it returns to our screens.
Season 2 could bring more than episodes but there hasn’t been any confirmation, only speculation. Season 2 may also have a lighter side to it, even though the series will still be set among the doom and gloom of war.

What Are The Top 3 Outstanding Episodes?
  • Episode 1 of season 1 was one of the most watched episodes as viewers got introduced to the residents of Great Paxford and their fears as the war is fast approaching.
  • Episode 4 of season 1 was rated as Spencer lied about being a soldier and instead he is a conscientious objector. Viewers also saw David going against the wishes of his mother and joining up.
  • Episode 6 of season 1 saw the evacuation of Dunkirk and fears over an invasion grew, while Frances wanted the Women’s Institute to raise money to purchase an ambulance.
Trivia and Facts
  • Did you know that there is a bit of a goof at the beginning of episode 3? It shows Lancaster bomber aircraft flying in the skies but they didn’t come

into service until 1942 and the show is set in 1939.

UPDATED April 3, 2016

Unfortunately, fans in the US will have to wait a little bit longer to see season 2 of Home Fires. The highly anticipated second season does air tonight (April 3) in the UK on ITV, but there is no confirmed air date for US viewers as of yet. We apologise if we got anyone's hopes up - trust us we are eager to see season two as well! However, we can confirm that PBS does hold the license to air the series in the US and as soon as we have a confirmed date from PBS we will share it with everyone via this page.

Home Fires Season 1 was a classy series that not only helps us understand the build up of WW2 impacted England but also how the day-to-day lives of women were impacted. Some issues were resolved in the last session but certainly not all. Loved it; can’t wait for Season 2 and hope it’s a longer season.

Another excellent series from ITV – just hope they keep producing it as they seem to come up with top notch shows and series and then, just drop them in the dust as we become really hooked in. Still can’t believe they only made 2 seasons of “The Bletchley Circle,” which was one of the best shows in years depicting a group of women who were code breakers for the war effort in WWII and then, get together again in the 1950s and use their unique skills to solve murders. It was such an inspiration to girls and women everywhere and even my husband started watching (with so many great actors and wardrobe and set styling every bit as good as “Mad Men”) it gave us a real glimpse into a group of doctors and nurses (and their significant others); both their professional and personal lives. The season one finale left us with a number of cliff hangers and no ‘closure!’

I wonder why ITV makes such good programming only to shelve it just as viewers are getting hooked in? Can’t HBO or Starz, etc., pick up the rights to these great series and air them here in the U.S.??? The quality of those shows is heads above most of what American producers throw at us!

I agree. I was very disappointed about the cancellation of The Bletchley Circle. It was of great interest to me, since it is only in the past 20 years that information has been showing up regarding Women Spies and the secretive work at Bletchley during WWII. The roles of women during the War changed sharply and it was never the same.

I love Bletchley Circle…..I watch at least once a year…..would love to see more of women and war….what they sacrificed and did behind the lines…..I also enjoy the WW1 series with the Australian nurses….both really well, accurate and historically written……need more of these types of shows…..this is the year…..I feel it! We need it….

I love the score and everything else about this show. It documents a side of the war effort which is seldom seen. I wonder when someone is going to write about what was happening in the US during this period?

I enjoyed Home Fires and I’m looking forward to season 2. I was disappointed the BBC one drama series ‘Our Zoo’ also filmed in Cheshire and set in the 1930s about how Chester Zoo was founded by an injured WW1 veteran, who dreamt of opening a zoo without bars, wasn’t continued. June Mottershead’s book continued the zoo’s story through WW2 and it was both incredible and inspiring how her family managed to keep the zoo open during this period.

I just loved this zoo I’m now and old lady Ha! of 71yo but can remember it almost like yesterday with photo’s as well taken of me there, I was around 3 to 4 years old. It was so lovely to actually know the story of how the zoo all came about.

I’m watching a marathon of the series. Never saw it the first time. Once Downton Abbey ended I was hoping for some period piece to watch. Poldark is a favorite. Now this. Love the women on the show and it is wonder to see a show that highlights strong women. Well acted and written. Looking forward to Season 2 when it airs here in the USA

USA here…..still waiting, but truly pleased there will be a Season 2. Can someone tell me: I saw the announcement about Claire Rushbrook. What are the RTS awards, and how are they different than the BAFTA TV awards? As USA, not too familiar with it all. Is BAFTA the most prestigious?

I loved Home Fires, and historical value of the series. It is interesting to see true events that happened on the Home Front in England and the extreme challenges they faced. I can not wait for the second series and hopes it will continue. I will purchase the DVD of the entire series for the enjoyment of myself and my family. I am intrigued by life and endured sacrifices by people who lived during that time. I remember a little of that time period.

I just finished watching all six episodes of season 1 of Home Fires in the past two days. I am hooked and anxious to watch season 2 in the USA. I hope PBS will reconsider the cancellation of the remainder of the story. I live in an area where we have limited access to the PBS programming, but the Masterpiece selections are some of the most enjoyable video viewing for my taste. I am not sure how to get season 2. I got season 1 through Amazon Prime.

If you subscribe to PBS as a Passport member, $5/month, you can stream all of the shows on your computer, or iPad. Full Downton Abbey, Poldark, Home Fires, and watch hundreds of other fantastic PBS shows, I also use Google chromecast to stream from my iPad to the TV, and the quality of programming is superb. Well, well worth the $5/month. Thank you PBS!

OMG, I am so thankful to hear there will be a Season 2, although we must wait for it longer here in the USA, while English viewers are already enjoying it. I hope more and more people will watch Home Fires, as it is an outstanding drama series, that really makes you’re living in the WWII period with the cast. I just can’t say enough about this outstanding Series that Masterpiece Theatre always scores a huge hit with their shows, such as the wonderful whirlwind ride we all took with Downton Abbey. Thanks for the quality shows you send us PHS, through Masterpiece Theatre. If only the USA could hit the Grand Slam Hits you all create for us to fall in love with!

I live in the US and really loved season 1. I’m very anxious to see season 2. I was under the impression that the show would last until the war was over. I really don’t like getting involved in a series only to find out it won’t last. Very disappointing!
I really liked the series about WWI nurses in France and it was cancelled after 1 season. I’m still mad about that!
I wish you would reconsider and have a season 3. At least give the fans closure of the story and what happens to everyone.

Please send me an email so that I don’t risk missing this wonderful show,.

I can’t believe this show will be axed after the 2nd series. As an Australian daughter of a woman who did similar jobs during WW2 in Australia while raising 2 children. To be able to see and compare the 2 country ‘s women’s contributions to the war effort is historically important. One can only hope second thought be given to restoring this important series.
